Thanks to all who attended Tough Talks: The AAPI Lawyer Experience in Virginia earlier this month. DIA Committee Member Gobind Sethi led a fantastic and thought-provoking discussion with panel members Daniel Park, Helen Vu, Susheela Varky, Rakin Hamad, JJ Siegner, and Matt Tsun. The session was held in honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month.

Join us this Thursday for our 2022 Tort Law Seminar, Begin with the End in Mind: Maximizing Recoveries, at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond. The morning sessions will focus on retention to mediation – how do you make the decision to mediate and most importantly, how do you succeed for your client? In the afternoon, you’ll learn some key tactics if you are proceeding to trial, such as using motions effectively and the care and feeding of experts.

There is so much happening in the world of trial practice right now that I’m sure your heads are spinning, as are ours. From legislative changes to appellate changes, we are here to help.

Along those lines, as the expanded Court of Appeals begins to see civil appeals, VTLA would like to be able to stay on top of issues as much as possible. We can only do that with your help. Right now, there is no mechanism in place at the Court to see what issues are being appealed in the Court of Appeals cases. Please let us know if you are involved in an appeal, the name of the case (and number when you have it) and the issues you expect to be addressed in the appeal. We have a special committee looking to reshape our amicus process to determine the new rules of engagement there, as well as watching for trends and issues.

Stay tuned for a second campfire later this year to discuss issues happening there.

Then keep staying tuned for a blockbuster seminar later in the year to explain the many great changes in auto insurance law that will kick in beginning next year.

It was fantastic to see more than 350 VTLA colleagues in person, joined by another 110 on Zoom, last month at Lansdowne for our 63rd Annual Convention. This was our first time hosting the Convention at Lansdowne Resort in Northern Virginia, and I think we can say that it was a popular choice given that your enthusiasm allowed us to reach record attendance levels.
