Summary

Personal injury clients are often left dealing with long-term disabilities—and when a case settles, there’s still a lot at stake, especially with large settlements. This one-hour program focuses on what comes next and how paralegals can help both their attorneys and clients make smart financial decisions. We’ll walk through the relevant federal and Virginia code sections, break down the different options available for managing settlement funds, and talk through common issues that come up in practice.

The program also covers how settlements can affect public benefits, including the transition to Medicare, along with special considerations for minors. We’ll round things out by looking at how workers’ compensation claims can overlap with personal injury recoveries—and what to watch for to avoid problems down the line.

Who Should Attend: Plaintiff paralegals, legal assistants, and attorneys working on personal injury, medical malpractice, or workers’ compensation cases—particularly those supporting clients who are living with long-term disabilities who receive larger settlements. This is a good fit for anyone who wants to feel more confident handling post-settlement issues and to better support clients during this stage of their cases.

Topics At A Glance:

  • Know the Codes!
  • Options for Managing Large Funds with Real-World Examples
  • What if Your Client is a Minor or is Elderly (Transitioning to Medicare)?
