Michael HuYoung is a shareholder at Barnes and Diehl, P.C. His areas of practice are family law and criminal defense. Michael began his practice of law in 1982. He is admitted to the United States Supreme Court, United States Court of Appeals (4th Circuit), United States District Court (Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia), Virginia Supreme Court, Virginia Court of Appeals, and the Circuit, General District, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Courts in the Commonwealth of Virginia. He is a Substitute Judge appointed in 2000 from the 14th Judicial Circuit (Henrico). He is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Richmond School of Law, teaching Advanced Criminal Trial Practice. In 2012, Best Lawyers in America® named him “Lawyer of the Year in White Collar Criminal Defense.” He has been a Best Lawyer® since 2009. He is a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America (Top ½% of Trial Lawyers in America), and he is also a Fellow of the Virginia Law Foundation (Top 1% of lawyers in Virginia). In 2010, Michael was selected as a “Leader in the Law” by Virginia Lawyers Weekly. He is a Virginia Super Lawyer® since 2008, and a Virginia Legal Elite since 2001. He is Martindale-Hubbell AV® rated since 2002. Currently, Michael serves on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Law Foundation and the Governance Committee of the Virginia Bar Association (VBA). He is a Member of the Virginia Criminal Justice Conference (VCJC) and its Steering Committee and served as a Former Chair of the VCJC. He was a Past Member of the Executive Committee and Bar Council of the Virginia State Bar (VSB) and a Past Board Member, Former Chair, and a Founding Member of the VSB Diversity Conference. He was a Former Member of the Board of Governors of the VBA where he chaired its Criminal Law Section. He was also the Former Chair of the Criminal Law Section of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association (VTLA) and a Former Member of its Board of Governors. He is also a Director of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Virginia (APABA-VA). Michael is a frequent lecturer at continuing legal education seminars for attorneys and judges.
