What should your goals be when preparing to take a deposition? Roger will guide you through deposing both a defendant and witness as well as preparing for objections and defense of your depositions. He will offer guidance on drafting a corporate designation and taking the deposition of the corporate designee.

10:15 a.m. Techniques for Taking More Effective Depositions

Have you ever reread a deposition while preparing for trial and thought, “I wish I had……”?  Lee will cover specific techniques that can at help minimize that problem and maximize the effectiveness of depositions. 

11:15 a.m. The Discovery Triumvirate: Interrogatories, Request for Production of Documents and Request for Admissions  
Christopher L. Anderson, BrickerAnderson, PC, Richmond

What is the best way to use these three discovery tools?  Most attorneys have a standard set of Interrogatories and Request for Production of Documents that they send in every case. Chris will review not only thinking through the discovery you send but also cover what do when you receive the responses.  He will also cover how to best respond to the defense’s discovery.

You may have heard the rumor that there is a way to get your client’s medical records without having to overpay on copying charges.  It is rumor no more! Robert will explain how to use the HITECH Act to get clients records for the cost of copying a CD.

In practically every case, the defense is retaining doctors for record reviews or 4:10 Exams.  Michael will discuss strategies for handling both types of  medical experts.

2:45 p.m. Answers, Special Pleas and Demurrers 
Anthony “Tony” M. Russell, Gentry Locke, Roanoke

The Complaint is filed; the Answer is in. Now what to do with that Answer or other responsive pleading? Tony will discuss how to challenge defenses raised in the Answer, pleas in bar, sovereign immunity pleas, bill of particulars and more things you need to consider when the defense has responded to your complaint.

3:45 p.m. Developing Damages 
Bellamy Stoneburner, Cantor, Stoneburner, Ford, Grana & Buckner, Richmond

Bellamy will provide a quiver of arrows to consider in your cases that will help the jury understand the damages to client.  Her arrows will include: life care plans, functional capacity exams, disability ratings, medical illustrations, economist, and much more.
